Traditional dentures are supported by the gums and require adhesive to hold them in place to prevent slipping. While modern dentures are much more comfortable and functional than they were in the past, they still have limits and drawbacks. One of the biggest concerns are dentures slipping, moving and falling out when eating or talking, which can be uncomfortable and embarrassing. A solution to this problem is implant-supported dentures, one of our restorative options at Haven Dentistry in Richmond, TX.
Dental implants are anchored in the bone of the jaw just like natural teeth. A titanium post that looks like a screw is surgically placed into the jawbone to hold tooth restorations in place. A dental implant can be attached to a dental crown to create a single tooth restoration, or it can anchor a denture in place. Implant-supported dentures use dental implants to support and anchor dentures in place for improved performance, appearance and comfort. A few implants can secure a denture plate, usually between 4 and 8 implants.
Benefits of Implant-Secured Dentures
While dental implants are the premium option in replacing teeth, they can be cost restrictive. Using implants for a full mouth reconstruction may seem ideal, but it is very expensive. It also requires a significant amount of bone to secure implants in place, which many people with missing teeth may not possess. With implant-supported dentures, you can obtain many of the benefits of dental implants with a lower cost that is available for more patients. Fewer implants equal a lower cost, but you still receive a full set of teeth that are fixed in place and supported on implants.
Implant-supported dentures look and function more naturally than conventional dentures. They can be cleaned like natural teeth, and permanently-secured implant dentures do not need to be removed. There is no need for adhesives that can be gritty and messy, and the dentures will not slip for embarrassing moments.
